Saint Mary of the Angels Church – Chicago, Illinois

Saint Mary of the Angels is a Roman Catholic church located in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago locals as well as tourists flock to this church on a weekly basis due to its rich history and ornate architecture. Some guests choose to attend services and others just to take in the rich details of the space. Many of the guests do not even profess an allegiance to the Catholic faith, but the structure is so breathtaking that members of all faiths love to visit.

The history and beauty of the building also make a wedding at Saint Mary of the Angels Church highly desirable for those of the Catholic faith. Brides have the pleasure of marrying in not only a beautiful location but also one that represents their beliefs in the Catholic Church.

Who can marry?

Unfortunately, a ceremony of marriage at Saint Mary of the Angels is not available to the public. Only Roman Catholic ceremonies will be performed here, and at least one member of the engaged couple must be an active parishioner of the church for four months or longer. A parishioner is defined as someone who regularly attended services on Sundays and holidays, as well as contributed in financial giving to the church.

The Space

There is no fear of a stuffy, bland ceremony in this church. Dark, classic pews, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and light colors are what initially strike visitors to the church. These alone are beautiful and impressive, and yet the longer one stays in the church the more intricate details can be noted. The light color-palette is especially impressive as it makes the space perfect for a wedding ceremony venue. Stained glass windows allow natural light to flow in and give the windows a stunning sparkle. Numerous statues and religious relics are found within the sanctuary, as well as carvings on the walls and ceiling. Perhaps the most notable piece of architecture in Saint Mary of the Angels Church is the dome situated above the altar itself. The dome is brightly painted in rich detail and depicts the Assumption of St. Mary. The bride will be a vision of beauty walking down the lengthy aisle before standing under such a magnificent dome to exchange vows with her groom. Thankfully, unlike many churches, photography at Saint Mary of the Angels is permitted.

The outside of the church is equally impressive. Comprised of dark brick and contrasting white stone, the structure is quite large and can be seen from far away. The building is complete with two brick towers and a large, white dome at the top. Massive white pillars join the towers, and under these pillars is the entrance to the church. Wedding photos at Saint Mary of the Angels are often captured on the white steps leading into the sanctuary with the pillars in the background.
